For the past year, I have been wondering and thinking about a subject that I find interesting and fun to write about. One can easily find one, or the other, seldom both. Today, I think I found a subject the embodies both. I want to take the readers on the quest that is finding a subject, researching it and then seeing if it all makes sense.
Without further ado, let’s get into it. There is a famous saying “may you live in interesting times“. Few can argue, that Americans aren’t. In the span of a few years, we’ve gone through major changes. Changes that some people had wished for, and others had anticipated with dread. At the same time, we live in an era where there are more individual freedoms than ever before, and yet more and more people are retrieving to their own groups. We live in a time where anybody, literally anybody, can have his or her voice heard by the masses, while we follow the advice of that same “anybody” without question. We live in a time where homosexuality and same-sex marriage have given way to gender neutrality. In a time where there can be billions of dollars in wealth, and yet thousands of homeless on the streets. We live in a time where there is more information freely available to the public, and yet, there are equal amounts of disinformation. We live in a time of contradiction.
In other words, it seems to me, that as we make gains on individual rights, there is a seemingly negative effect to the needs of the group. Similarly, when we make gains on politics, there seems to be a negative effect on the individuals. Why are the needs of the individual, so different from the needs of the group, if after all, the group is made up of individuals.
This got me to this question: Is there a relationship between the theory of relativity and quantum physics, and politics (group) and self-governance (individuals)? Odd question, right? What does physics have to do with politics? The answer may prove to be, nothing. But I still want to explore it.
I want to explore, why is it that in physics we have found a theory, the theory of relativity, that works pretty well for all bodies larger than an atom. And yet, this perfectly working theory does not work well in the sub-atomic level? I know I’m grasping here, but is there a relationship between the theory of relativity and quantum theory, and politics and individual rights. Just like we have yet to find a theory of everything, we have also not been able to find a way to effectively govern (politics) which does not also encroach individual freedoms. Equally, we’ve not been able to scale individual freedoms to large groups of people without resulting in chaos and anarchy.
My goal is to try to:
- Research the two topics
- See if there is any smoke
- Share with you my quest
I want to hear your thoughts, so please share and comment. What do you think?
