The second day of the trial of the Impeachment of Donald Trump concluded yesterday with very few surprises. The impeachment managers, the prosecution, took to the floor to make their case for the removal of the President. The day concluded with very few surprises.
Today marked the first day of the actual trial, as the first day was spent agreeing (or disagreeing) on the rules. The impeachment managers have 24 hours in which to make their case and having used 8 of those 24 hours leaves them with the rest of this week. Next week, unless something changes dramatically, the President’s defense lawyers will begin to make their case. That means that in theory, the prosecution and defense could be done by Wednesday of next week, leaving the remainder of the week for the 16 hours of questions from senators. Thus, the whole trial could be wrapped up by the first week of February.
This means that McConnell could call for a vote on the 3rd, and have a conclusion for Trump to brag on the 4th, the day for his state of the union speech to congress. We can only imagine the spectacle if and when Trump is acquitted.
As far as surprises are concerned, some senators were seen playing crossword puzzles or simply falling asleep. Is that a surprise? Meh.
