If the impeachment of Donald Trump seemed almost certain at the end of last year, his acquittal seems equally so. On Friday, the Republican-led senate voted 51 to 49 not to call witnesses. Until Friday, there had been some murmuring that McConnell didn’t have the votes to block witnesses from testifying. However, by the end of the day, the two outstanding Republican senators he needed, namely Sen. Lamar Alexander and Sen. Lisa Murkowski both decided to vote against the motion to call witnesses.
The rationale they gave so reminded me of the same one used by the SEC and the US government back in 2008. The rationale being that banks needed saving because they were too big to fail. This was the same used by the republican senators, that yes, the impeachment managers had made a compelling case against Trump having withheld the aid to Ukraine in order to force them to investigate a political rival. However, the “action”, they were quick to not call it a crime, did not warrant the removal of a President (too big to fail).
American justice is very much like this. Lady justice may be blind, but her hand is often “guided” in the direction that most benefits those in power. I said it before, and I’ll say it again; Trump will NOT leave quietly, unless he’s removed by force. Trump is a cancer whose only concern is replicating himself in order to survive. Trump is not concerned with the country, the constitution, or even his supporters. The latter are the saddest example of humanoids. How can someone that has clearly lied to them about “bringing jobs back”, “building a wall”, and “a great economy”, all of which have not happened in any meaningful way, still believe in him? It makes no sense.
The vilification of people is the only answer. Us against them is proving to be more powerful than we originally thought, though why should I be surprised by this? That’s what Hitler used to get Germans to his cause and begin a second world war. No, I am not implying that Trump is trying to exterminate minorities (though neither did Hitler initially). I am simply stating that we, non-Germans, are often quick to judge and say “how could they?” Well, we do not need to learn German to ask that question any longer.
The vote for acquittal is scheduled for Wednesday, the day after Trump’s state of the Union speech in congress. At least he won’t be crowing about his acquittal during the speech, though I am certain he’ll take a jab or two at the speaker of the house and the “bad” democrats.
