Conceal your motives, even if transparent

This coming weekend, the F1 circus will visit Austin for the US Grand Prix. On the same weekend, NASCAR will be visiting the Texas Speedway. The events are about 3 hours away, but you’d never know it from the views expressed by a concerned citizen.

There’s very little competition between NASCAR and Formula 1, but there is some, and I think it’s an absolute insult, lack of respect, lack of professionalism on the part of Formula 1 to schedule a race on the very same day

Eddie Gossage – Autoweek Podcast

Gossage went on to say:

To me, it’s an assault by Formula 1 on NASCAR. It’s not about Texas Motor Speedway. It’s about something bigger than that. It’s about the sport. It’s not good for either. The loser is the race fan, and they’re who I work for. I know that while there might not be a great deal of crossover, there is some. Some people are going to be forced to choose one over the other. Whether is 50-50 or 99-1, that’s not good for the sport

Eddie Gossage – Autoweek Podcast

Gossage of course, is the President of the Texas Speedway, in case that was not obvious in his overly transparent rant. However, by cloaking his rant in the weakest of cloaks, “the Champion of the fans“, Gossage can still claim altruism to those not familiar with the subject.

This is the key, that in our quest to communicate with others, we fail to realize that our communication is not 1 to 1, but 1 to many. In the days of social media, where a tweet or post can be seen by thousands of people, we fall into the trap that in order to make our point as clearly as possible, one must be as pointed as possible. Perhaps this is true under certain conditions, but in general, try cloaking your intentions and emotions just a little bit. I can assure you that people’s tendency to default to truth will play in your favor.
