It is not cocaine, or marijuana, oxycodone or even nicotine. It is caffeine. Yes, that venerable cup of “joe” most adults in the world depend upon is a drug, as mild as it may be. Just like any addictive substance, there are withdrawal symptoms when you stop using it. However, to its credit, when we are feeling the effects of caffeine, they are mild and non-altering (at least not in a negative way).
With climate change, the drug most of us have come to love, may soon be no more. In the US, in the past, the most popular form of coffee came from a rather bitter species of coffee, Robusta. This is the type of coffee we’d see brewed at the diner, or truck stop. However, in the 60s, a new type of coffee was introduced to the American public, Arabica. This is the coffee you get at Starbucks, or your local coffee shop. This coffee is much tastier, and it is the very type we may lose if the climate continues to decline.
So for the love our favorite drug, please do your part to stop climate change. Otherwise, you will end up with some very bitter (pun intended), addicts going through withdrawals.
