How NOT to not change someone’s mind

We have all been at the requisite Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner where we get into a discussion with someone about a topic we disagree on. The topic can be as mundane as a cooking recipe, to something as polarizing as our elected officials. And time after time, we are there, facing the other person, in disbelief of their divergent view(s). And we seldom come to an agreement. More often than not, we push each other farther and farther away from agreement, compromise or even understanding. One of the...

This is 100% real

The fight took place over the weekend, June 1, for the unification of the Heavyweight Boxing Title of the World. For this fight, Anthony Joshua and Andy Ruiz were contending to unify the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles. The fight only lasted 20 minutes (less 7 full rounds) and by the time it was over, a chubby kid was the new Champion. Watching the two fighters side by side prior to the fight, only Ruiz’s family and coach could have believed he’d win.

Making truth and lies out of facts

Much is to be said about today's 24 hour news cycle and how it treats truths and facts. And our President has done very little to help the situation, in fact, one could argue he's taken it to the next level. He's done this by labeling anything with which he does not agree as fake, or untruthful. The oddest part is how his following "seems" to believe him. How can this be? How can people, believe him? This got me thinking, what is the relationship between truth and...

The facts behind the Huawei US ban

Much has been made about the recent Huawei ban by the Trump administration. It is mostly the headlines that are making their way to people with very little in the form of the reasons behind them. Because of the size of Huawei, the ban's consequences come from different news sources. For example, you may hear "Huawei Android phones banned", or "Huawei 5G banned in the US", or "Huawei Matepro laptop banned". As a reader what are you to think? First, the ban is not against Huawei products. It...

Going to war with Iran is a bad idea… agreed.

The possibility of going to war with Iran is looming and it has become a stronger possibility as days have progressed. Trump came into office with many promises, and one of them was no more wars. Since Trump took office, he's most definitely limited our confrontations with other nations. In Syria, he began to pull US troops from the conflict earlier this year. With North Korea, whether I agree with his approach in dealing with Kim Jong-un or not, he managed to de-escalate the conflict with the Asian...

Medications and their cost in the US

Everyone knows the cost of prescription medications it the US is very high. In fact, there is a whole industry that caters to people that need large or constant quantities of said medication, either due to a person's age or for health reasons, in order to make them affordable. But why? Why is prescription medication so expensive in the US? And is there something we can do about it? There are many reasons that explain why the costs of medications are higher in the US than elsewhere, however,...

Happy Mothers day?

It's true! It really depends on where you mother lives and/or what her nationality may be. In the US, Mother's day is celebrated on the Second Sunday in May (today). And if you lived in the other 126 countries that also celebrate Mother's day on the Second Sunday, well... Happy Mother's day to you too. But what if you lived in Norway? Well, then we are way off. In Norway they celebrate Mother's day on Second Sunday of February. How about our neighbor to the south, Mexico. Like...

Our own worst enemy

Game of Thrones is on its final season. It has been a long journey. A journey that began back in 2011, more than 70 episodes ago. The show has become so successful because of its close imitation to real life. Almost everyone can relate to one of its many characters; from courageous knights, to the beautiful princesses, to the loyal soldiers, to the caring fathers and mothers, to the manipulating whisperers, etc, etc. There is something for everyone. One of the biggest threats in the show is the...

NPD Symptoms: #8 – Expect special favors and unquestioning compliance with their expectations

Recently I posted the list that psychologists and psychiatrists use to diagnose NPD, or Narcissistic Personality Disorder. I posted it as a reflection on how this diagnosis fits our President so closely and how two of those symptoms or traits scared me (#9 and #10 on the list). Today I want to talk about how #8 can be equally dangerous. As you may know, Congress and the Trump administration (the White House) are currently at war on at least two fronts; Trump's taxes and a copy of the...

NPD?

NPD, or Narcissistic Personality Disorder, is a diagnosis that has been playing around for a while as related to President Trump. I recall the first time I heard about it during the campaign. It was then, when much noise was made about the legitimacy of a candidate with NPD. Campaigns are weird, ugly, and seldom represent reality. All candidates stand there and try to present an alternative persona of themselves. A persona that will get them elected. For this reason they often promise things they know they cannot...
