Last year, OnePlus and Asus, released two mobile phones which featured screen refresh rates higher than the every other phone in the market, 60Hz. OnePlus included phones with 90Hz screens while Asus had 120Hz screens, the latter option was directly aimed at gaming enthusiasts. This year, at least so far, Samsung seems to be following suit with their release of the S20 line.
The S20 phones by Samsung went from S10s, last year, to S20s, this year. I suppose their nomenclature is following this decade. With that in mind, the latest version of Samsung’s flagship phone is going to be a strong contender for best phone of the year. I get that it’s only February, but simply looking at the specs, you cannot see another competitor surpassing the S20 by much. Sure, specs are not everything, and they do require a careful touch of software atop to make them all work together. However, until those other phones arrive, namely the next iPhone, Pixel, or anything from Huawei, the S20 is here to rule the roost.
In my opinion, the most important specs are the camera, the screen and the battery. The phone can be spec’d with a 108MB main camera (keep in mind most phone cameras today are about 12MB), a mega large, almost bezel-less 6.9 inch-display (supporting 90Hz and 120Hz refresh rates) and a huge 5000mAh battery (most batteries are in the 3000mAh range).
So far, the reviews of the phone have been positive, though in all fairness, there haven’t been any releases from other brands to which you can compare. This is due to the time of the year and the Covid-19 outbreak in China, which caused the WMC to be cancelled. The WMC is where a lot of manufacturers tend to release new phones (LG, Huawei, OnePlus, etc).
So, should you get one? I say wait. The next iPhone is scheduled for March, and until that releases, you will not really have anything to compare the S20 to.
