Tesla has been hard at work in the past few years. While they had great initial success with their Model S and Model X, both were geared towards the luxury segment. This approach worked really well to get the marque into the minds of the American and global public.
Tesla’s next step was to lower the barrier of entry for their vehicles. In mid-2017, Tesla’s entry model, the Model 3 was released. This was the first all-electric vehicle to have a range of over 300 miles and starting at a supposed $35,000. While the initial models didn’t quite meet the bargain price-tag promised by Mr. Musk, once the company figured out their production gremlins, it arrived.
This brings us to the newly announced Cybertruck. This is a truck for the new century. The specs of the truck are amazing, just see below:
- Range: 500+ miles
- 0-60 mph acceleration: <2.9 seconds
- Towing capacity: More than 14,000 lbs
- Payload: Up to 3,500 lbs
- Vault length: 6.5 feet
- Storage capacity: 100 cubic feet of exterior, lockable storage including the vault, frunk, and sail pillars.
- Suspension: 4” in either direction
- Touchscreen size: 17”
- Body: Ultra-Hard 30X Cold-Rolled stainless steel. If there was something better, we’d use it.
- Seating capacity: Up to six adults
- Charging: Can be charged at home, at Destination Charging locations, and with our network of more than 14,000 Superchargers, including on our newest V3 technology, which is helpful for long hauls and towing.
The range is beyond any other electric vehicle in the market. Even the most powerful Model S, X, or 3, top out at around 350 miles. The body is so strong that even during the demonstration, using a hammer, they could not dent it. The windows are also hardened, though during the presentation they managed to crack them. The best part, Musk is promising a starting price of $40,000 (though of course, expect the first models out of the assembly line to be well beyond that).
The design of the truck is very polarizing. The split is even, between love or hate, nothing in the middle. Tesla has explained the current design is still in prototype mode. So there is still hope for those who do not like it. I personally like it a lot. While I agree that it’s very striking, that is exactly why I like it. It is only Tesla, these days, that is pushing design philosophies beyond what is on the market.
I’ve placed an order for one, will you?
